January 21, 1955-Disneyland Hotel to be built
On January 21st, 1955, the formal announcement of the new $10,000 Disneyland Hotel was disclosed to the press. The story was covered by newspapers nation wide. The Hotel would be developed by Wrather-Alvarez Hotels Inc., designed by the famous architectural firm of Pereira and Luckman and built by the construction company of Hodges-Vergrift in Southern California. The brochure pictured is the most rare of Disneyland Hotel brochures. It was distributed prior to even the opening of Disneyland. Alongside West Street, amid the construction of the Disneyland Hotel, stood a sign announcing the opening of the Disneyland Hotel. At the base of that sign was a small booth usually manned by either security or a construction official. This brochure was given out from within this booth to anyone interested in the details on the new Hotel being constructed. Disneyland would open in July and this brochure could then be had from several locations within the berm. The Disneyland Hotel would open on October 5th, 1955. Opening night had only seven rooms available starting at only $9 a night! Construction was also underway on the administration building, restaurants, shops and the North Garden wing of guest accomodation structures.
